The population of common Spoonbill
(Platalea leucorodia) overwintering in the Iberian Peninsula has consolidated
again this year, with a total of 1,510 individuals having been counted.
The autonomous region with the greatest
number of birds was Andalusia (even without counting thr numbers
overwintering in the Bay of Cadiz – second most important place for this
species overwintering in the Iberian Peninsula – where no census took place),
with 81% of the Spoonbills, followed by Galicia with 11% and Extremadura with
3%.
Other areas, such as the wetlands of the
Cantabrian coastline, were generally stable.
The census is undertaken by volunteers,
who send us data from different parts of Spain (see list). We are missing data
from the east coast of Spain, where it is quite likely that a small group of
Spoonbills overwinter.
From GRUSEC we would like to express our
appreciation to all those contributors who made the effort to carry out the
census and copy the data to us. Very many thanks to all of
them.
